Here’s a thought I’d like to share…
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and controversy. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
Some of the most amazing people I know are the ones I met while undergoing chemotherapy. We, meaning all the chemo patients and whoever was with us, would sit in the same room, not very far apart from one another. Everybody started at about the same time each day because we were there the better part of the day.
We got to know each other and would talk about things. Oh, the stories some of those people had!! The courage, the positive attitude, the willingness to get up every day and figure it out – it was inspiring!
Of course, there were some people that felt victimized by the circumstances of their lives, or they were so locked in fear that they made poor choices for themselves about how to take care of themselves. But for the most part, the true character of the people I met was astoundingly compassionate and courageous.
There’s something about sitting with someone who has the perspective of understanding what’s truly important. And oftentimes, it’s the challenges and controversies in our lives that reveal that perspective.
Think about some of the really big hurdles in your life. You’ve survived! Have those hurdles served to soften your heart, or harden it? Life is short. Live open!
Wishing you the gift of knowing someone who knows how short life really is,
