What You Can Expect
During sessions you are expected to talk about the primary concerns and issues in your life. A session lasts 50 minutes, but some people request longer sessions. Usually weekly or biweekly sessions are best. During the time between sessions it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records. For therapy to “work,” you must be an active participant, both in and outside of the therapy sessions.
Benefits from Psychotherapy
Often it is helpful just to know that someone understands. Therapy can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. Many people find therapy to be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, and the hassles of daily life. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.
Confidentiality
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission. However, there are a number of exceptions to this rule. Exceptions include:
-
Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
-
If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s. The therapist must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
-
If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, further measures may be taken without their permission in order to ensure their safety.

Psychological Testing & Assessment
We provide formal and informal psychological testing as well as comprehensive assessment services to people of all ages. Once we’ve gathered the results, we’ll create a customized treatment plan to support your healing, growth, and success.
What is Testing?
Actually, testing and assessment are two separate elements of a psychological evaluation.
Psychological testing refers to standardized methods of measure. They can take the form of surveys, multiple choice questions, questionnaires, checklists or other modes of the psychometric testing.

Psychological assessment is more inclusive and covers standardized testing as well as interviews, informal tests, observational data, medical school records, and more.

The direction of the evaluation depends on your referral question(s), financial ability, and time availability. Some of the areas that testing measures:
-
Intellectual and emotional abilities
-
Learning and reasoning capacity
-
Attention and memory
-
Dexterity and reaction time
-
Strengths and aptitudes
-
Personality
Reasons for Testing
You should undergo a psychological assessment when you experience any of the following:
-
Difficulty in school, work, relationships, or everyday life routines
-
Compulsive thoughts or behaviors revolving around sex, crime, money, or your physical appearance
-
Thoughts of suicide or self-harm coupled with a specific plan of how you’re going to do it
-
Chronic fatigue, depression or anxiety
-
Frequently losing your temper; aggressive acting out
-
Disproportionate emotional responses to environmental triggers
-
Reliving traumatic events through flashbacks or nightmares
Preparing for Your Evaluation
The thought of undergoing a psychological evaluation may be nerve racking, but testing and assessment are meant to help you, not hurt you.

Although it may be difficult, try to:
-
Get a good night’s sleep the evening before the evaluation.
-
Eat breakfast the morning of your testing.
-
Be comfortable with answering all questions truthfully. It’s the only way to get closer to a solution that has a real, positive impact on your life.
