No Mud, No Lotus

Here’s a thought I’d like to share…

No mud, no lotus. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Life gives us mud. We can wallow in it, or grow lotus flowers. The choice of what to do with it is ours; the choice of whether or not it’s there is not.

The lotus flower is a beautiful flower whose seeds can lie dormant for quite some time. Until the seed has the “perfect” conditions – which, for the lotus, are sticky, gooey mud – it waits. When the perfectly imperfect conditions present themselves, the lotus sinks its root deep into the mud, sprouts a long stem that grows up through the murky water and then, upon reaching the surface, opens in an amazing show of beauty and delicacy, supported by the surface of the water.

There will always be mud. Things will get dirty. Stuff will happen. The question is not “How do we get rid of the mud?” The question is “How do we grow beautiful flowers in the mud we’ve been given?”

Wishing you no wallowing and lots of growing,

Namasté Augusta
